@fallowtail and I were talking about the Sam hate in this fandom and we have thoughts.

Sam loves the ghosts, she does. But she is allowed to be mad at them. They caused many problems and last night’s episode was a prime example. What Flower did could’ve cost Sam and Jay thousands of dollars. She has every right to be mad at Flower. This is their business. Their income. She has every right to get mad at the ghosts when they put into their business.

Sam has done nothing to warrant hate. She is flawed but that doesn’t make her a bad person because she yells at the ghosts sometimes.

It’s weird being in this fandom here and on instagram. Like following the official account and seeing all of the middle aged people commenting like oh. You have a job and a family I’m the outlier here. I’m very glad they don’t have the horrors of a large very young fanbase though I wouldn’t wish that on anyone 😔 plus they r the ones tuning in live and keeping it renewed for new seasons so god bless them !!!

BBC Ghosts has started being aired on CBS, and I'm a bit scared that we're gonna get a bigger fandom because of it. Sure, it'd be nice to keep the fandom 'alive' for a bit longer (not that I don't think we could do that on our own), but I like how small and connected we are! We've got some big names of the fandom who aren't too big for their britches, there's a steady flow on fan-content, and there isn't really discourse. I just don't wanna lose that. I love this show, and I still would if I didn't have the fandom, but the fandom really is something special to me.

THE CBS VERSION OF GHOSTS LOOKS BLOODY GREAT. i mean, its not like any element of the of was fucking stripped away, now was it?! i get that y’all think that the BBC version is fantastic amazing showstopping (slaps knee) incredible and i agree, but i think that the CBS one should be given a bloody chance! it looks to be about as hilarious as the BBC’s version, and plus, there’s POC GHOSTS!! that’s FANTASTIC!! maybe it’s a bit ironic for me to be saying this, but y’all need to stop being so fucking childish. give the show a chance. watch the show after the filming is complete. maybe you’ll like it.

Does anyone else have a “comfort fandom”, like a fandom you’re a part of but not THAT into, and only ever fall back on when your main fandoms are stressing you out? Cause mine’s BBC’s Ghosts. Ghosts is fr the most feel-good sitcom I’ve ever watched, peak misfit found family shit, warm and fuzzy vibes 100%. I first watched it during a stressful period of my life and starting my day’s by watching a handful of episodes genuinely improved my mental health and decreased my anxiety. Plus, (I’m a casual in the fandom so this might not be entirely accurate), but I swear there’s like no fandom discourse at all. Everyone’s just chilling and being positive, it’s great. If you haven’t seen BBC’s Ghosts yet (not to be confused with CBS’s Ghosts, the American remake, which I gather is not very good based on the one episode I watched accidentally because I mistook it for BBC’s Ghosts), I highly recommend. And shout out to the Ghosts fandom, y’all have got me through some tough times lol

World Building: Simulation Metaverse

This metaverse is quite similar to CBS Metaverse. However, the point of divergence is more recent. Also, there is no pre-existing ghost realm or fairy realm - and there is, of yet, no human cloning. Also, as in “our” world, Dolly the Sheep has been cloned.

The point of divergence is 1993, which is around the same time as the point of divergence of Youth Found Universe and Youth Lost Universe. In “our” world, it was the year of Eternal September. In Simulation Metaverse, the internet takes a different direction - as immersive virtual reality begins to take off.

In early 1996, Jimmy Reed (as a high school senior) has written an editorial on the rights that should be granted to clones and AI if either should ever come to fruition. This also soon comes to add a new layer to the “violent video games” discourse, as serious consideration is given to the concept that AI may end up actually gaining consciousness.

In the year 2000, two virtual reality video games take off: Planet Bejeweled and The Sims. Planet Bejeweled is an MMO game where you log into a realm that has an extraterrestrial aesthetic, where gemstones spawn like fruit - and the object is to harvest gemstones. A bunch of friendly chibi creatures abound, and it’s common for players to form friendships with the chibis. You wear a haptic suit (pajama-like) to enter the colourful world. The world has 250 years of history.

As for The Sims, each Sims world is located in cyberspace. It takes about three weeks or so to create a new Sims world. There are various pre-made families, townies, and occupational Sims that come with all or many Sims worlds. You can choose from various themes, such as the following: Future, Future Goth, Modern, Modern Goth, Steampunk, Steampunk Goth, Clockpunk, Clockpunk Goth, Medieval Fantasy, Medieval Fantasy Goth, Arabian Nights, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Grome, and others. You can also choose which supernatural beings to turn on or off. Turning on “ghosts” also turns on a secondary plane. You can also turn on technicoloured human(oid)s or greyscale human(oid)s, and assigns which powers (if any) to give to various colours. You can also turn on “talking animals” (which affects pets) or “anthropomorphic animals”.

The Sims come in two varieties. The smaller variety can be controlled by one to ten people, and each player can create up to five households. On activation, players get access to “memories” of their created families and selected pre-made families. Players can use Simoleons to help out various families. They can also enter the Sims world via haptic suit. Upon the date of creation, each Sims world has 250 years of history. The world is also added to a mega-grid, which allows for easy access to other Sims world.

The larger variety can contain up to a thousand created families. Players can submit up to five (the same families they use in the smaller version), but no more than three are usually accepted. So, on average, each MMO session has about 500 players. If more than one family is accepted, each family accepted will be allocated to a different neighbourhood. When applying to join a session, you are asked to rank your neighbourhood preferences. The Modern theme is always used, and everything is turned on. This means that, if any families that are accepted have any pets, the pets will be talking animals. The ancestry of your families will likely also be different.

A Sims Gallery is also available. Families and individual Sims can be used only in the smaller variety, but houses and items are available for both variants. Any families added to the smaller variant does not count towards your family limit.

By 2002, Second Life comes to fruition - and, along with that, comes sentient operating systems! Unlike in Her, the OS do have virtual bodies - and Second Life is the world they call home. Users can spend “physical” time with their OS by wearing a haptic suit to enter Second Life. Second Life is also a place to house the terminally ill, particularly children. The AI that reside in Second Life are a combination of brain uploading and bot generation. The OS and other AI can even have babies and create families.

Soon after Second Life comes Open Sim, in which more virtual worlds can be created. There is more room for creativity - as, unlike The Sims, you are *not* limited to only terrestrial landscapes. You can create cloud landscapes, space landscapes, alien landscapes, underwater landscapes, and others. While you can turn on “Merfolk” in The Sims, the focus there is always on land. Various worlds can easily be accessed via a hyper-grid.

By 2005, Dream Depot is created by a group of seasoned lucid dreamers. This enables even beginners to lucid dream, and to even bring their dream worlds to the virtual space. The dream/virtual worlds are connected via a hyper-grid. In addition, dream walkers can visit these realms without wearing virtual gear.

By 2017, Simulation Metaverse and CBS Metaverse begin to fuse.

Before I started reading, my initial thoughts of the novel were solely based on the summary I read. I read “bad boy” and “murder” and “ghost (summoning)” and thought it would be dark, almost gothic with a healthy dash of romance.

I was wrong, and I am SO HAPPY I was.

The novel is not overly dark but chockfull of Lantinx culture, Spanish narrative and trans-acceptance (which is highlighted over the rejection Yads face from his family, but it’s great he has allies (Martiza!) and people (Julian!) who are willing to be corrected and seamlessly accept his gender). It’s also very humorous and written in a way that doesn’t disillusion the reader from Yads’s inner turmoil with gender dysphoria and rejection as a brujo. To put it simpler, the audience is always aware of Yads’s wellbeing, and the way he’s written seems authentic to what a teenage trans-boy would be dealing with. 

One point I did mention already in Discourse was that the books seems to heavily rely on Latinx food and food imagery so far. Only one thought comes to mind: food pornography. When the making of, consuming of, or even imagery of food is overly used in piece of media, it can be interpreted as food pornography, where (most of the time) culturally significant food is being overly used and basically acts as the selling point for the author or creator. The sell the culture through the use of food, ignoring other aspects of the culture and making food the main purpose. A good example of this in Fifth Chinese Daughter by Jade Snow Wong, where she is going into very, very deep details on how her father teachers her how to cook a pot of rice or what they ate for her younger brother’s party where all her Chinese relatives came over. Wong mentions food so much, and there is the argument that food is just a large part of Chinese culture, which is why Wong mentions it so heavily in her (memoir?) book. However, she has been accused of using so much imagery of food that it becomes the main selling point of her novel. 

Is the same thing happening in CB? I don’t know, yet. There are more chapters to get through. Also, I do know that food is a big feature of any culture (including Lantinx!) and I am not upset with the imagery of food. I am just concerned that food pornography with dominate the novel and set Day of the Dead significance, LGBT+ representation, the issues of teenage gender dysphoria, a plethora of Latinx history to the side. I would hate to see that happen, so fingers crossed!
